A bright light in the obesity statistics

The Centers for Disease Control released the most recent numbers on obesity in the United States. While obesity rates for most Americans remain unchanged, the rapid rise has been halted.
Perhaps even more encouraging is the reported drop in obesity among 2-5 year olds. Possible reasons for this decline may include changes to the supplemental food program for Woman, Infant, and Children (WIC), more women breastfeeding, improvements in daycare food and activity programs, and a decrease in consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.
Consider making similar changes in your home. You may see similar results and, more important, a healthier family.
- Give each other a high five. Eat five or more fruits and vegetable servings each day. Include at least one at each meal and snacks too. Let children choose these at the grocery store and mealtime.
- Make water your beverage of choice. Beverage calories add up quickly. Keep soda out of the house and limit juice to 4-6 ounces. Drink mostly water and milk.
- Watch less, do more. Spend less time sitting in front of the television or computer. Get up and dance, jump, stretch or do yoga. Get outside for a trek to the playground or a game of tag.
