Mayo Clinic conducts important research related to tumors of the head and neck through the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. The head and neck surgery research program involves a team of physician researchers and scientists from various disciplines who conduct basic science, translational research and organ preservation studies. The goals of this program include developing new treatment strategies, enhancing patients' quality of life, and improving the possibility for prolonged survival and a cure for head and neck cancers.
One of the major advancements that Mayo Clinic has contributed to the field of head and neck surgery is developing a robotic tonsil tumor removal technique. This technique allows better access to tonsil tumors, results in fewer adverse side effects and improves patients' quality of life after surgery. Mayo researchers plan to investigate the use of this robotic surgery method on the voice box and other head and neck regions that are difficult to access through the mouth.
