Glioma

Research

Mayo Clinic doctors and scientists in the Neuro-Oncology Program are actively involved in the latest research on gliomas and other brain tumors. The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center is the only multisite cancer center in the nation and one of three cancer centers to receive a National Cancer Institute-sponsored Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant for brain cancer research.

The goals of the Neuro-Oncology Program are to:

  • Identify cellular pathways of brain tumor development and progression
  • Identify risk factors that lead to development of brain tumors
  • Find and assess new biomarkers (protein that indicates disease presence) to diagnose brain tumors and to predict the outlook and response to treatments
  • Develop new treatment approaches that reduce symptoms, and improve survival and quality of life

Patients have access to potential leading-edge glioma treatment discoveries through Mayo Clinic's participation in numerous clinical trials that originate at Mayo Clinic and those sponsored by cooperative clinical research trials networks, including the North Central Cancer Treatment Group.
