Regional Medicine Practice

The Regional Medicine Practice provides health care to patients from more than 60 neighboring communities outside Olmsted County, in southern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa and western Wisconsin.

The physicians in this practice provide medical care in collaboration with a patient's local primary provider. Adult patients are typically referred from regional clinics when they require the expertise and highly specialized care at Mayo Clinic. Patients may also self-refer to this Mayo practice, but they should have a local provider for primary care issues.

Regional Medicine staff provide comprehensive examinations as well as consultations for specific complex medical problems. Subspecialty and surgical consultations are often integrated to accommodate each patient's needs. Physicians within the section coordinate care for patients visiting Mayo Clinic and facilitate communication to help coordinate care with local and referring physicians.

Services offered by the Regional Medicine Practice

• Care for regional patients with undefined symptoms and complaints, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, abdominal pain, and back pain, to help with diagnosis and treatment recommendations
• Coordination of patient care by surgeons and other specialists at Mayo Clinic
• Preventive screening services for health maintenance, including mammograms, Pap smears, routine colon cancer screening evaluations, cholesterol screening, and blood pressure screening
• Collaborative care of patients with chronic medical illnesses, for example, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and emphysema throughout the various stages of their illness
• Preoperative evaluation of medical risks prior to surgery
