National Medicine Practice

The National Medicine Practice is involved in the care and management of patients coming to Mayo from outside southern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, and southwestern Wisconsin. Physicians in this practice provide comprehensive, coordinated and efficient care with diagnostic and therapeutic expertise. In addition, the National Medicine Practice specializes in coordinating the complex care needs of patients requiring additional subspecialty expertise.

The National Medicine Practice is involved in ongoing efforts to study health care delivery and innovation systems, health care quality, and clinical research. Members of the practice also maintain close educational ties with Mayo Medical School, Mayo Graduate School of Medical Education (MGSME) Internal Medicine Residency Program, and several Mayo fellowship programs in general medical fields.

Services offered by the National Medicine Practice

  • Care for patients with undefined symptoms and complaints, such as shortness of breath, chest pain, abdominal pain, and back pain, to help with diagnosis and treatment recommendations
  • Coordination of patient care provided by surgeons and other specialists at Mayo Clinic
  • Preventive screening services for health maintenance including, mammograms, Pap smears, routine colon cancer screening evaluations, cholesterol screening, and blood pressure screening
  • Collaborative care of patients with chronic medical illnesses for example, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and emphysema throughout the various stages of their illness
  • Preoperative evaluation of medical risks prior to surgery
