General Internal Medicine in Minnesota

Education

Education

The Division of General Internal Medicine has an active group of medical educators dedicated to leadership and excellence in medical education. These faculty are recognized for their clinical teaching in Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education. Many division faculty also teach other medical professionals at local, national and international continuing medical education conferences.

In addition to teaching, faculty participate in research and scholarly writing in medical education. Ongoing projects include developing Web-based learning, curriculum, faculty and resident evaluation tools, and exploring novel methods to teach professionalism, practice efficiency and medical dictation skills. General Internal Medicine faculty have written, edited and collaborated in many published scientific journal articles, medical textbooks and online medical curricula.

Education and Training of Physicians

Mayo is committed to the education and training of physicians. The Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) has helped train resident physicians and fellows in Mayo Graduate School of Medical Education (MGSME) programs for many years. GIM fellows and internal medicine resident physicians provide ongoing care for local and regional patients seeking primary or ongoing continuity care, under the supervision of GIM faculty physicians. The Resident Continuity Clinic is part of the Regional Medicine Practice.

GIM Section of Medical Education

The section of Medical Education is a community of clinician educators who have dedicated significant time to teaching the art and skill of clinical medicine to physicians in training. Members of this section are recognized regionally and nationally as leaders in medical education. They are active in many scholarly activities, including authoring and editing medical textbooks, conducting research in medical education, and mentoring others on the skills of teaching.
