Gastric Cancer

Risks

Risk factors for gastric cancer include:

  • Age 50 or older
  • A diet high in foods preserved by smoking, salting or pickling
  • Alcohol and tobacco use
  • A family history of stomach cancer
  • Obesity
  • Prior partial gastrectomy for peptic ulcer disease
  • Atrophic gastritis (pernicious anemia)
  • H. pylori infection
  • Immigration from a country with a high rate of gastric cancer (e.g., Japan, Chile)
