Ganglion Cyst

Diagnosis

After assessing your symptoms and doing a physical exam, Mayo Clinic doctors use the following procedures to diagnose a ganglion cyst:

  • Imaging studies. An X-ray is usually taken of the affected area to rule out other conditions, such as arthritis or a bone tumor. If your doctor suspects that a small ganglion cyst could be hidden under the skin, he or she may recommend an MRI or ultrasound scan.
  • Aspiration. Your doctor may confirm the diagnosis of a ganglion cyst by withdrawing some fluid from the cyst with a needle.
