In Arizona, Mayo Clinic offers all treatment options for gallbladder cancer described on these pages. Surgical removal is the initial component of treatment in most patients. Mayo Clinic physicians may recommend radiation therapy in combination with chemotherapy (concurrent chemoradiation) either before or after surgical removal of the cancer. Concurrent chemoradiation may be preferred for gallbladder cancers that are localized but cannot be removed surgically (locally unresectable) or for cancers that have been removed surgically but are at risk for local relapse if no additional treatment is given. For cancers that are locally unresectable initially, the decision may be made to perform surgical removal and intraoperative irradiation (IORT) after a course of preoperative chemoradiation.
Mayo Clinic emphasizes a collaborative approach to care. Many health care professionals work together to determine the best ways to treat each patient. Physicians from Gastroenterology work with specialists from General Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, Radiation Oncology and other specialties as needed to treat patients with gallbladder cancer.
