U.S. News & World Report has again named Mayo Clinic to its Honor Roll of top hospitals in its 2008 America's Best Hospitals issue. The 170 "best hospitals" included in the magazine's survey are judged, according to the magazine, "not in routine procedures but in difficult cases across an entire specialty." It says the 19 hospitals on the Honor Roll are "an elite group, which rewards breadth of excellence."
"We're committed to setting the standard for high-value care, and it's gratifying when outside organizations like U.S. News & World Report recognize the excellence and effort of our staff as we come together in teams focused around the patient," says Glenn Forbes, M.D., CEO of Mayo Clinic's Rochester campus. "Nothing is more important to Mayo Clinic than quality and providing the best care to every patient, every day."
To make the magazine's "Honor Roll," a medical center has to rank at or near the top in at least six of the 16 specialties included in the rankings. Mayo scored in the top five in 12 specialties and ranked first or second in seven specialties, and Mayo was recognized in every category that U.S. News assessed:
"While we appreciate the recognition, an Honor Roll ranking can't fully capture what makes Mayo Clinic unique," says Dr. Forbes. "Mayo Clinic is more than a collection of highly regarded, individually ranked specialty groups. The teamwork among our entire staff to provide quality care and exceptional service is what creates the Mayo Clinic experience for our patients."
