Student Nurse Extern Program

Program Details

Qualifications

To participate in the Summer Nurse Extern Program, you must:

  • be completing your junior year of a baccalaureate program in nursing, including completion of two semesters of clinical nursing experience or must be completing your third semester (Block III) of an associate program in nursing, including three semesters of clinical nursing experience
  • meet Mayo Clinic job-related health requirements
  • have a favorable recommendation by one of your clinical faculty
  • have current Basic Life Support certification
  • have a satisfactory academic record

Schedules

Mayo Clinic Hospital nurse extern staff work three 12-hour shifts per week, including every other weekend. Typically, shifts are:

  • 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Schedules are posted in advance and are modeled to shadow your assigned preceptor.

Uniforms

Nursing staff at Mayo Clinic Hospital wear white uniforms. Shoes are white. Uniforms and their care are your responsibility. You can wear your school of nursing uniform if it is white, and you are further identified by a Mayo-provided name badge.

Housing/Relocation

You are responsible for your housing and relocation expenses.
