COSMETIC SURGERY - MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
Mayo Clinic Provides 10 Tips for Those Considering a New Look

By Robert R. Orford, M.D., C.M.
Director, Executive Health at Arizona

Fuller lips. Smaller nose. More slender thighs. Chances are, having cosmetic surgery has at least crossed your mind. And, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 6.6 million Americans have done more than think about cosmetic surgery - they've actually done it. The most common surgical procedures are nose reshaping, liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery and facelift.

If you've been thinking about cosmetic surgery, consider these 10 tips to help you decide:

  • Understand the limitations, as well as the benefits, of cosmetic surgery. It won't achieve perfection, and there's no guarantee that the results will look exactly as you envision. Don't forget - those photos in magazines are usually retouched.
  • Have realistic expectations. Cosmetic surgery can reshape your body, not your life. Although an enhanced appearance may improve your self-esteem, cosmetic surgery won't save a marriage or get you a better job.
  • Time your surgery. Pick a time when you are not under exceptional stress and when you have emotional support available.
  • Be prepared. You will have discomfort during and after surgery. Scars and other side effects are also a possibility.
  • Remember: Cosmetic surgery has two words and the second word is "surgery." There are risks.
  • Pay what it takes to make sure your surgery is safe. Safety must always be considered over price.
  • Be ready for sticker shock. Chances are, insurance will not cover the cost. Be ready to pay out of pocket, and preferably not by incurring debt to do so.
  • Research credentials. Make sure your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Don't be afraid to ask about training, qualifications and credentials. Choose a doctor with hospital privileges. This means that their qualifications have been reviewed and accepted.
  • Don't be afraid to "go under." General anesthesia is a good thing. There are two doctors in the operating room - the surgeon and the anesthesiologist.
  • Do your homework. Don't jump on the bandwagon. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. No doctor can promise that you will not have complications or that you will have a perfect result.
