An important aspect of esophagectomy is determining which patients will benefit the most from the surgery. Powerful diagnostic capabilities are important for patients being considered for this surgery. At Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, these capabilities include state-of-the-art CT, MR and PET imaging, as well as endoscopic ultrasound and the ability to do fine-needle biopsies during endoscopy.
Physicians in the departments of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Cardiothoracic Surgery work together to evaluate patients and identify those who would be helped by esophagectomy.
About 20 percent of patient undergoing esophagectomy for Barrett's dysplasia or cancer may develop recurrent Barrett's disease. So, follow-up after the surgery is important for these patients. Endoscopic treatment options, such as photodynamic therapy, are also available.
