Esophageal Cancer

Treatment in Arizona

Mayo Clinic in Arizona is a comprehensive esophageal cancer treatment center where specialists from many fields work collaboratively to provide the best possible combination of support and care for each patient. The clinic's tumor board, which meets to discuss every case, includes experts from Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery, Gastroenterology, Medical Oncology, Radiology and Radiation Oncology. Each specialist has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating esophageal cancer using the most advanced methods available.

Gastroenterologists at Mayo Clinic in Arizona are well known for their pioneering use of minimally invasive therapies in the treatment of early-stage esophageal cancer. They were the first to perform radiofrequency ablation and are currently evaluating cryotherapy and other ablative techniques for removing cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions in the esophagus.

For patients with more advanced disease, surgeons offer surgery to remove the esophagus. Whenever possible, esophageal resection is performed laparoscopically. Minimally invasive esophagectomy can reduce postoperative pain and complications and may shorten recovery time from weeks to just days. For many patients, surgery is combined with simultaneous radiation and chemotherapy (chemoradiation).
