El estiramiento es una parte importante de cualquier programa de ejercicio. La mayoría de los programas de entrenamiento aeróbico y de fortalecimiento muscular implican tensión y contracción muscular.
El estiramiento después de hacer ejercicio ayuda a que las articulaciones se muevan en toda su amplitud de movimiento y estimula el flujo sanguíneo a los músculos.
Como regla general, estira los grupos musculares principales después de hacer ejercicio. Se demostró en algunos estudios que realizar estiramientos estáticos antes de una actividad atlética disminuye el rendimiento.
Si no haces ejercicio con regularidad, es conveniente que estires varias veces por semana, después de una breve entrada en calor, para mantener la flexibilidad.
Cuando practiques estiramiento, hazlo suavemente. Respira libremente mientras mantienes cada estiramiento alrededor de 30 segundos. Intenta no contener la respiración. No rebotes ni mantengas un estiramiento que te produzca dolor. Es normal sentir tensión mientras te estiras. Si sientes dolor, has ido demasiado lejos.
Hacer movimientos similares a los que implica tu deporte o actividad física (estiramiento dinámico) a bajo nivel puede ayudar a complementar el estiramiento estático y a mejorar el desempeño atlético.
