Aesthetic plastic surgery is structural cosmetic surgery performed with the goal of reshaping the nose, ears, chin, cheekbones and neckline to either rejuvenate or improve the cosmesis of the face. Many of the procedures are designed to reverse the signs of aging or to remove contour irregularities or deformities with the goal of making the overall appearance of the face more natural.

Reconstructive facial surgery is the correction of congenital, traumatic and postsurgical deformities, as well as reconstruction of defects caused by the removal of skin cancer.
Aesthetic and reconstructive facial surgery is performed in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology by surgeons who are board certified in otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery as well as facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The surgeons have completed a comprehensive five-year training program in otorhinolaryngology head and neck surgery and passed a series of oral and written examinations to become board certified by the American Board of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. In addition, the surgeons have completed subspecialty training in facial plastic reconstructive surgery and completed an oral and written examination to be board certified by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Consultation for aesthetic and reconstructive facial plastic surgery consists of a meeting with the surgeon at Mayo Clinic to discuss goals, alternatives, potential risks and benefits of facial surgery. Once the treatment course has been decided, the surgery takes place in the hospital as either an inpatient or outpatient surgery. The follow up care is performed by the surgeon at Mayo Clinic.
