When dystonia appears in childhood, usually between ages 5 and 16, it tends to start in the foot and gradually involves the entire body.
When it starts in adulthood, it tends to locate in one body area and remain there.
In some people the disease progresses little or not at all. In others, initial, mild symptoms may become more noticeable and widespread. Generally, the earlier the onset of symptoms, the more likely the disease will progress as the person ages.
