Dyspepsia

Research

Researchers at Mayo Clinic are considered international authorities on functional gastrointestinal disorders and are continually trying to better understand the mechanisms involved in functional dyspepsia so that more effective treatments can be developed. All three Mayo Clinic locations are currently conducting a clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health investigating the use of antidepressant medications to treat functional dyspepsia.

Some additional areas of study include or have included:

  • Use of other novel drugs for treatment, such as kappa opioid receptor agonists, to reduce sensation problems
  • Genetics of dyspepsia — sorting out the role of genes versus the environment and identifying the genes that might be relevant
  • Potential roles of infection and inflammation in functional dyspepsia
  • Dyspepsia in the community — its frequency and why people do or do not seek treatment
  • Association of psychological factors with functional dyspepsia
  • Functional dyspepsia in children and adolescents
  • Roles of stomach expansion and emptying
  • Overlap of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia symptoms

Mayo Clinic doctors also regularly evaluate current diagnosis and treatment strategies to help develop guidelines for use at Mayo Clinic and other centers around the world.
