Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a dietary supplement may cause some unwanted effects. Alfacalcidol, calcifediol, calcitriol, dihydrotachysterol, and ergocalciferol do not usually cause any side effects when taken as directed. However, taking large amounts over a period of time may cause some unwanted effects that can be serious.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Late symptoms of severe overdose

  1. High blood pressure
  2. high fever
  3. irregular heartbeat
  4. stomach pain (severe)

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

Early symptoms of overdose

  1. Bone pain
  2. constipation (especially in children or adolescents)
  3. diarrhea
  4. drowsiness
  5. dryness of mouth
  6. headache (continuing)
  7. increased thirst
  8. increase in frequency of urination, especially at night, or in amount of urine
  9. irregular heartbeat
  10. itching skin
  11. loss of appetite
  12. metallic taste
  13. muscle pain
  14. nausea or vomiting (especially in children or adolescents)
  15. unusual tiredness or weakness

Late symptoms of overdose

  1. Bone pain
  2. calcium deposits (hard lumps) in tissues outside of the bone
  3. cloudy urine
  4. drowsiness
  5. increased sensitivity of eyes to light or irritation of eyes
  6. itching of skin
  7. loss of appetite
  8. loss of sex drive
  9. mood or mental changes
  10. muscle pain
  11. nausea or vomiting
  12. protein in the urine
  13. redness or discharge of the eye, eyelid, or lining of the eyelid
  14. runny nose
  15. weight loss

Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.
