Side Effects

Along with their needed effects, medicines like vinblastine can sometimes cause unwanted effects such as blood problems, loss of hair, and other side effects. These and other effects are described below. Also, because of the way these medicines act on the body, there is a chance that they might cause other unwanted effects that may not occur until months or years after the medicine is used. These delayed effects may include certain types of cancer, such as leukemia. Discuss these possible effects with your doctor.

Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More frequent

  1. Cough or hoarseness accompanied by fever or chills
  2. fever or chills
  3. lower back or side pain accompanied by fever or chills
  4. painful or difficult urination accompanied by fever or chills

Less common

  1. Blood in urine or stools
  2. pain or redness at place of injection
  3. pinpoint red spots on skin
  4. unusual bleeding or bruising

Rare

  1. Black, tarry stools

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

Less common

  1. Joint pain
  2. sores in mouth and on lips
  3. swelling of feet or lower legs

Rare

  1. Difficulty in walking
  2. dizziness
  3. double vision
  4. drooping eyelids
  5. headache
  6. jaw pain
  7. mental depression
  8. numbness or tingling in fingers and toes
  9. pain in fingers and toes
  10. pain in testicles
  11. weakness

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

Less common

  1. Bone or muscle pain
  2. nausea and vomiting

This medicine often causes a temporary loss of hair. After treatment with vinblastine has ended, or sometimes even during treatment, normal hair growth should return.
