Proper Use

Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. To do so may increase the chance of side effects.

This medicine comes with a Medication Guide and patient instructions. You must read, understand, and follow these instructions carefully. Ask your doctor if you have any questions.

You may take this medicine in two dosing regimens: Split-Dose dosing regimen and Day-Before dosing regimen. Your doctor will tell you how to take this medicine depending on your colonoscopy schedule, distance traveled, and other personal circumstances.

To use this medicine:

  • One dose of this medicine consists of two packets of powder, each packet is mixed with cold water and taken at separate dosing times. Drink the liquid right away after mixing. Do not prepare the solution in advance.
  • Do not take the powder directly without mixing it with cold water. Doing so, may increase risk of side effects.
  • Use the supplied medicine cup when preparing the solution.
  • Drink the additional prescribed amount of clear fluids (e.g., water, apple juice, white cranberry juice, white grape juice, or ginger ale) after every dose of this medicine to prevent dehydration.
  • Do not eat solid foods or drink milk while taking this medicine.
  • Drink clear liquids until your colonoscopy.

Avoid taking other laxatives while you are taking this medicine.

Avoid taking any medicine by mouth within 1 hour before taking Prepopik™. Oral medicines may not be absorbed completely.

If you are taking chlorpromazine (Thorazine®), digoxin (Lanoxin®), penicillamine (Cuprimine®, Depen®), iron supplements, and certain antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline, Avelox®, Levaquin®, Vigamox®), take these medicines at least 2 hours before starting Prepopik™ and 6 hours after taking Prepopik™.

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For oral dosage form (powder for solution):
    • For cleansing of the colon:
      • Adults—Your doctor will prescribe your dosing regimen to be taken the day or night before your colonoscopy.
        • Split-dose dosing regimen: Take your first packet the night before colonoscopy, and the second dose the next day, in the morning or at least 5 hours before your colonoscopy.
        • Day-Before dosing regimen: Take your first packet in the afternoon or early evening, and the second dose at least 6 hours after the first dose, the night before colonoscopy.
      • Children—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.

Keep out of the reach of children.

Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
