Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Convulsions
  2. decreased urine
  3. dry mouth
  4. fever
  5. increased thirst
  6. irregular heartbeat
  7. loss of appetite
  8. mood changes
  9. muscle pain or cramps
  10. nausea or vomiting
  11. numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or lips
  12. shortness of breath
  13. unusual tiredness or weakness

Less common

  1. Abdominal or stomach cramps or pain
  2. blurred vision
  3. chest pain
  4. chills
  5. clay-colored stools
  6. cloudy urine
  7. cold sweats
  8. confusion
  9. cough
  10. dark urine
  11. decrease in urine output or decrease in urine-concentrating ability
  12. diarrhea
  13. difficult or labored breathing
  14. dizziness
  15. dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position suddenly
  16. drowsiness
  17. feeling unusually cold
  18. headache
  19. itching
  20. light-colored stools
  21. mental changes
  22. muscle cramps in the hands, arms, feet, legs, or face
  23. muscle spasms (tetany) or twitching
  24. nervousness
  25. noisy, rattling breathing
  26. numbness and tingling around the mouth or fingertips
  27. pounding in the ears
  28. rash
  29. shivering
  30. slow, fast, or pounding heartbeat or pulse
  31. sneezing
  32. sore throat
  33. sweating
  34. swelling of the fingers, hands, feet, or lower legs
  35. tightness in the chest
  36. trembling
  37. troubled breathing at rest
  38. unpleasant breath odor
  39. vomiting of blood
  40. weight gain
  41. yellow eyes or skin

Rare

  1. Abdominal or stomach tenderness
  2. black, tarry stools
  3. bleeding gums
  4. blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
  5. bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet
  6. blood in the urine or stools
  7. blue lips and fingernails
  8. burning, crawling, itching, numbness, painful, prickling, "pins and needles", or tingling feelings
  9. continuing ringing or buzzing or other unexplained noise in the ears
  10. coughing that sometimes produces a pink frothy sputum
  11. cracks in the skin
  12. decreased appetite
  13. difficulty with swallowing
  14. dilated neck veins
  15. disturbed color perception
  16. double vision
  17. extreme fatigue
  18. fast or irregular breathing
  19. feeling of discomfort
  20. general feeling of tiredness or weakness
  21. halos around lights
  22. hearing loss
  23. hives or welts
  24. inflammation of the joints
  25. joint pain
  26. large, hive-like swelling on the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, or sex organs
  27. loss of heat from the body
  28. loss of vision
  29. lower back or side pain
  30. night blindness
  31. overbright appearance of lights
  32. painful or difficult urination
  33. pale skin
  34. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  35. puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  36. rapid weight gain
  37. red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  38. red, irritated eyes
  39. red, swollen skin
  40. scaly skin
  41. sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
  42. stomach pain, continuing
  43. swollen lymph glands
  44. tingling of the hands or feet
  45. tunnel vision
  46. unsteadiness or awkwardness
  47. unusual bleeding or bruising
  48. unusual weight gain or loss
  49. upper right abdominal or stomach pain
  50. weakness in the arms, hands, legs, or feet

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

Less common

  1. Decreased interest in sexual intercourse
  2. difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)
  3. difficulty with moving
  4. discouragement
  5. feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
  6. feeling sad or empty
  7. inability to have or keep an erection
  8. indigestion
  9. irritability
  10. loss in sexual ability, desire, drive, or performance
  11. loss of interest or pleasure
  12. muscle aching or stiffness
  13. pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones
  14. passing of gas
  15. sensation of spinning
  16. sleepiness or unusual drowsiness
  17. soreness of the skin
  18. stomach fullness or discomfort
  19. stuffy or runny nose
  20. swollen joints
  21. tiredness
  22. trouble concentrating
  23. trouble sleeping

Rare

  1. Acid or sour stomach
  2. belching
  3. change in taste
  4. hair loss or thinning of the hair
  5. heartburn
  6. increased need to urinate
  7. increased sensitivity of the eyes to sunlight
  8. increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
  9. loss of bladder control
  10. loss of taste
  11. menstrual changes
  12. passing urine more often
  13. redness or other discoloration of the skin
  14. severe sunburn
  15. stomach fullness, discomfort, or upset
