Diverticulitis

Diagnosis

At Mayo Clinic, diagnosis of diverticulitis begins with a thorough review of your medical history. Your doctor can confirm the level of tenderness and swelling in your abdomen with a physical exam.

Diagnostic procedures may include:

  • Computed tomography (CT). CT scans allow the doctor to visualize inflamed/infected pouches and rule out other conditions that mimic diverticulitis, such as irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Blood test. A blood sample will be tested for elevated white blood cells, a sign of infection.
