Research leaders

Until recently, the cause of most cases of Fuchs' dystrophy was unknown. Mayo Clinic researchers discovered the major genetic association of the common form of Fuchs' dystrophy. It's related to a mutation in a gene called transcription factor 4 (TCF4). Mayo Clinic researchers have also revised the clinical classification of Fuchs' dystrophy to include corneal imaging that can predict the prognosis of the disease.
