I've been hearing a lot about the concept of resilience.
Resilience is the ability to recover readily from illness, depression, adversity, etc. Characteristics associated with resilience include optimism, an active or adaptable coping style, and the ability to tap into social support.
A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in 2011 showed that high levels of resilience were significantly related to lower HbA1c levels indicating better glycemic control.
Another study with similar results was published in the British Journal of Health Psychology in 2008. It showed that those with low and moderate resilience levels showed a strong association between rising distress and worsening HbA1c results. Those with high resilience scores didn't show this same association.
Some people are lucky enough to be born with a high level of resilience, but even if you're not one of them, there are things you can do to boost your resilience.
The American Psychological Association offers the following 10 suggestions for building resilience:

These tips for living with diabetes also are very important for so many other situations. I find them very relevant for dealing with the effects of depression and anxiety that can often emotionally isolate a person from friends and family.
This may be directed toward diabetes, but after having complicated surgery that involved taking down a ureterosigmoidostomy and getting 2 ostomies from Dr.Heidi Nelson and Dr Igor Frank----I have slowly worked my way back from what felt like hell to an almost reasonable life.
These are Wonderful recommendations-----but for 15 yers I have expected and received nothing but " Wonderful" from Mayo's.

Very useful tips not only for those with chronic disease , but for a general good health!!!
I definitely agree that the biggest problem in coping with diabetes, Gastroparesis, chronic pancreatitis, depression, etc, etc, is lack of a support system. No family or friends makes it hard to even want to fight. It truly would be the one thing that could make the difference-having someone who cares.
In short, use common sense.
I think I'm a diabetic....but I refuse to become a diabetic ...a slave of doctors and needles....Every day I do 3-4 hr intense walking (got a club foot so running is out) and every other day Weights and stationary bicycle...and walk to the gym too! (1 hr each way)....my mother is blind and in a care home....my older sister heading that way too...NOT ME!....The day I go down will be on my terms....I punish myself w/exercise every day....but....I EAT GOOOOOD!....No whining here!

How can I explain this testimony to the public about a great man who help me out in serious illness. I have Diabetes Disease for good 2 years and I was almost going to the end of my life. All I have in my mind is let me just give up because life is not interesting to me any longer but I just pray for God every day to accept my soul when ever I’m gone. Lucky to me my kid brother run to me that he found a doctor in the internet who can cure Diabetes Disease online he help me out on everything, the doctor ask for my details, so he can prepare the herbal medicine for me from his herbal home. I am not a gloom and doom outlook person, however, in the last year I have lost relationship with three members of my immediate family. All because of lies told by one family member and a series heartbreaking events. I am not strong anymore, I just don't have it to give, I actually have physical reaction to stress or any confrontation, diversity. I am having a very difficult time, I wish I could recover.

These 10 suggestions are really effective alternate to medication.To develop reselience through inner self change in thoughts,actions, reactions and social engineering is highly commendable . Thanks Sara.
This article really hits home. Myself and others I know suffer from Diabetes and it is definitely a growing problem not only in the USA but across the world. It is really all about food choices though and dietary changes, which I have recently learned. I've started the Diabetes Escape Plan recently, which has really helped lower my blood sugar and keep my health in check.

Wonderful tips, which in the end basically mean you should enjoy the company of family and friends while investing in your own good humor and self confidence. This is the way everyone should live!
This such sound advice. I was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic about seven years ago. My A1c is always within normal range (5.6-6.0. Currently taking 500mg Metformin/day. So far all is well. Trying to remain optimistic which is working for me.

You missed one: ignore the standard health care industry advice to eat lots of carbs and little fat. Instead, eat very little carbs and lots of good, naturla animal fat. Avoid veg/seed oil as well.
