In treatment you may be advised to avoid any unnecessary bacteria to prevent food-borne infections. Meanwhile, you read and hear often about needing to eat more fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. But what happens when you are told to avoid fresh produce during treatment? Is it still possible to eat well while avoiding fresh fruits and vegetables?
In the past, you may have been told to follow a neutropenic diet if your white blood cell count was low during treatment. Over the past year, recommendations have changed and that's no longer necessary. However, it's still important to follow rules of good food safety during treatment.
Rather than remembering long lists of what's safe and what might be a problem, think about how these general guidelines to limit your risk of food-borne illnesses.

Loretta, You don't have to change your nutrition habits for the types of treatment you are having. Food safety is important to remember at all times, but especially important if your immune system is limited. I wish you the best.
I will not be receiving chemotherapy treatments or radiation, just either Tamoxifen, Arimidex, Femara or Aromasin. I won't know until I meet with the Medical Oncologist on March 2nd.
This will be a five year program. Should I change my eating and drinking habits?
My breast cancer was ER positive, so I was told to avoid any food with phytoestrogens like soy, flax, almonds, etc. So many foods contain these. It would be so helpful to get a list of foods I can eat.
My wonderful G.I. Specialist told me in no uncertain terms: " cook your veggies !" I don't like skimping on salad, but my post treatment body far prefers to follow the medical advice.
I'm 6 mos in remission (ovarian )....& docs laud my recup & general health(diet promoted. Two thots: (1)CANNED FOODS SHOULD NOT BE A REGULAR PART OF ANYONE'S DIET. (2)TAKE CARE IN HANDLING FRUITS & VEGGIES(BANANAS, APPLES, ORANGES,LEMONS, LIMES, POTATOES, TOMATOES, ETC)...RINSE/WASH...& WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER PEELING/PREPARING. AVOID HAVING LEMONS & LIMES ADDED TO DRINKS WHEN DINING OUT. "MICRO-MANAGEMENT" IS A GOOD FOCUS DURING TREATMENT & BEYOND.
I have been going through chemo for two years and I have NEVER been told to avoid fresh veggies/fruit in favor of cooked or canned.
