Mayo Clinic doctors conduct clinical and laboratory research in the diagnosis and treatment of Barrett's esophagus. Researchers in the Barrett's Esophagus Unit are studying the use of advanced endoscopy to treat Barrett's esophagus and early esophageal cancers. They are also investigating drugs that decrease the risk of cancer and are working on the early detection of esophageal cancer. Scientists in the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program are working to identify behavioral and environmental risk factors with the goal of preventing esophageal cancer. And researchers in the Romero lab (Barrett's esophagus/esophageal cancer) are focused on reducing the mortality rate of esophageal cancer.
