Advanced diagnosis
Mayo Clinic health care professionals use a variety of advanced imaging techniques, including 3D echocardiography and transesophageal echocardiography, to accurately diagnose aortic valve disease and other heart conditions.
For example, multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) can be used to evaluate aortic valve stenosis and determine its severity. In MDCT, several cross-sectional images are taken of the aortic valve, and the aortic valve is measured. This imaging test can also measure the amount of calcium in the aortic valve.

Innovative treatment
Mayo cardiovascular surgeons use advanced surgical procedures to do aortic valve repair or replacement. Surgeons also may perform minimally invasive heart surgery, which uses smaller incisions than those used in open-heart surgery. Mayo Clinic surgeons may use 3D-printed models of the heart and valves to prepare for heart valve surgery.
