Science of Health Care Delivery

In the 20th century, Mayo Clinic combined teamwork with engineering principles to develop a novel, patient-centered model of care that transformed medicine. Today, Mayo is poised to continue reshaping medicine through its new Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery.

Through the center, Mayo physicians and researchers are partnering with systems engineers to define, implement, measure and validate high-value, high-quality health care best practices that you deserve and the country needs. Initial areas of focus include primary care, disease prevention, chronic disease management and specialty care.

In addition to benefiting our patients, the center's findings will also be used to enhance health care delivery throughout the United States and the world. In scholarly publications and through demonstrations, Mayo Clinic will share new and better models of health care that fulfill patients' needs while increasing quality and reducing costs.

An early example of the center's work is a collaboration formed with Cleveland Clinic, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Denver Health, Geisinger Health System and Intermountain Healthcare.

In this first-of-its-kind collaboration, Mayo Clinic and its collaborating institutions will share data related to outcomes, quality and costs across a range of common, costly conditions and treatments, such as diabetes and knee replacements.

In another instance, the center is working to apply genetic algorithms to improve patient appointment efficiency.
