In Your Will

By making a bequest (a gift in your will), you can help support Mayo Clinic for years to come. Please consult your attorney and financial advisors as appropriate. You might consider giving specific property (such as real estate), a specific dollar amount or a percent of your estate. By making a gift in your will, you are eligible to join an organization of benefactors from throughout the United States and around the world. Learn more about The Mayo Legacy.

Recommended bequest language:
"I give, devise and bequeath to the Mayo Clinic, a Minnesota charitable corporation located in Rochester, Minnesota the sum of ___ dollars ($___) (or percent of the residue of my estate) or (other personal or real property appropriately described) to be used for ______ (or as its Board of Trustees shall deem advisable) to best promote the institution's objectives and mission."

Matching Gifts

Many employers have matching-gift programs through which your generosity to Mayo can be multiplied. As an educational institution, Mayo is eligible for many matching-gift programs of corporations, foundations and other organizations.

Charitable Gift Annuities and Other Planned Gifts

Charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts can help you support the mission of Mayo Clinic, provide income for you and your loved ones, and reduce income and estate taxes.

When you set up a Mayo charitable gift annuity, you transfer cash or securities to Mayo Clinic in exchange for a contract that obligates Mayo to pay a fixed income for life to you and/or another person. As a result of this irrevocable transfer, you are entitled to:

  • Life income with an attractive return rate for you and your spouse
  • Significant tax-free income, since part of your income stream is treated as a return of principal (a cash gift maximizes tax-free return)
  • A substantial income tax deduction
  • Reduction of capital gains tax on transfer of appreciated securities
  • The satisfaction of knowing your gift supports advanced biomedical education and research that will benefit future generations

You have the freedom to decide how often you wish to receive payments (for example, quarterly or annually). You can decide whether you want the payments for your life alone or for the lives of yourself and your spouse (or another person). You can decide what assets or combination of assets you will use to fund the annuity.

To explore some of the benefits a Mayo charitable gift annuity may have for you, please try the private and confidential Planned Giving Calculator. Please note that Mayo Clinic has contracted with PG Calc Inc., a private vendor, to provide the calculator as a service for prospective benefactors.

Members of the Department of Development will be pleased to work with you and your advisors in determining the type of gift that best meets your needs. Please call (507) 284-8540 or e-mail. Your inquiry is confidential and involves no obligation.

By making a planned gift, you are eligible to join The Mayo Legacy.

Stocks and Other Property

Gifts of appreciated securities offer tax advantages including forgiveness of the tax on capital gain and an income tax charitable deduction for the fair market value of the securities. You also can make gifts of property such as real estate, life insurance, retirement accounts, works of art, jewelry and valued collections. These gifts provide tax advantages and may require independent appraisals to meet Internal Revenue Service(IRS) guidelines.

In Memory or In Honor

Any gift can be made in memory or in honor of a special person or event. By supporting Mayo's work, such thoughtful gifts can help ensure a healthier future for people today and in the future. When making your gift, please indicate the name of the person you wish to honor and provide a mailing address as appropriate on the giving form, in a short note or in the memo portion of a check addressed to Mayo Clinic. We will be honored to send a notification of your generous remembrance to the individual or individuals memorialized or honored (gift amount is not disclosed).

Our online giving site and our Printable Donation Form also include text fields which allow you to designate your gift to a specific Mayo Clinic program and instruct us to notify others that you have made a gift in memory or in honor of someone.

Obituary Information

Mayo Clinic Department of Development can help you include memorial gift information in obituaries. Sample sentences include:

  • The family requests that memorial gifts be forwarded to the Mayo Clinic cancer research program, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, Minnesota 55905.

  • Gifts in memory of Mr. Smith can be made to the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's disease research program.

Designating Your Gift

When making a donation to Mayo Clinic, you may state the purpose for which you would like Mayo Clinic to use your gift. Please consider broad categories such as "medical education and research," "cancer," "Alzheimer's disease," "capital projects" (construction of facilities) or "charity care." For more information, please send an e-mail to the Department of Development or call (507) 284-8540.

Pledge to Benefactors

As a benefactor of Mayo Clinic, you can expect:

  • Efficiency: Our goal is to spend no more than 14 cents on fund-raising administration for each charitable dollar that we raise. In 2005, we were able to keep that figure to 9.6 cents, thanks to the generosity of our many benefactors.

  • Impact: When you make a gift to Mayo Clinic, you are adding strength to strength. Mayo Clinic is the best-known and most-preferred "brand name" in medicine. We consistently earn top ratings in many studies of medical organizations. The innovations that we pioneer benefit our patients as well as people around the world. Your support will help us continue this legacy of leadership.

  • Options: Mayo's initiatives in medical research and education offer a wide range of options for your philanthropic investment. You may consider supporting construction projects, research programs or educational opportunities. You might identify with a certain medical condition or with Mayo's commitment to display artwork within our facilities and offer other dimensions of a humanistic environment. You can connect with a specific Mayo Clinic campus or give support that extends throughout our system.

Receipt

To confirm that we receive your gift and for tax purposes, we will send you a letter documenting the gift amount.
