A team focused on you

Many people with skin concerns also have related conditions, such as cancer or a disorder of the immune system. Our skin disease experts work with other specialists to provide the whole-body, individualized care you need. Your team might include oncologists, endocrinologists, clinical geneticists, neurologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, and others. We are dedicated to creating a team of specialists that know how to care for your unique situation.

Having all this expertise in a single place means your care is discussed among the team, test results are available quickly, and appointments are scheduled in coordination. What might take weeks or even months to get done elsewhere can often be done in a matter of days at Mayo Clinic.

Our dermatologists, dermatopathology specialists and Mohs surgeons also offer resources that work with the treatment you receive from your local healthcare professionals.

Innovative research that improves care

Mayo Clinic dermatologists, researchers and physician-scientists continually pursue research and innovation. Our specialists study new diagnostic tools, treatments and procedures to improve dermatologic care for people everywhere. They work with researchers around the world to offer the most up-to-date care possible and advance the field of dermatology.

Expertise in brown and Black skin

Mayo Clinic dermatologists are trained in identifying symptoms and treating conditions for people of color. This expertise is key to avoiding incorrect or delayed diagnoses.

People of color may have special concerns related to many conditions and procedures. Examples are acne, atopic dermatitis (eczema), melanoma, melasma, sun protection, ringworm (scalp), hair and scalp health, and cosmetic treatments. Our doctors can answer questions and concerns about how symptoms look on brown or Black skin and whether procedures such as laser therapy carry increased risk of changes in skin color caused by postinflammatory hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation.

We are focused on improving the disparities in care for people of color, representation and expertise for all underrepresented people in professional healthcare roles. Increasing knowledge in the treatment of people of color in medical education, research and clinical practice is a priority for our department.
