Mayo specialists are highly skilled in recognizing the types of depression and the conditions that trigger them. During the initial evaluation, they identify each patient's unique needs, health issues and concerns, and provide compassionate support and the treatment tools necessary to address them. Mayo psychiatrists and psychologists often work with other specialists to treat patients whose depression is complicated by other medical problems.

The medical team works together to gather information on the patient's medical history, family history of depression and symptoms over time. The patient also may be asked to complete psychological tests and depression questionnaires. A physical exam may be recommended for patients with other health concerns that can cause or impact depression.
