Physicians in the Vascular Center are leaders in research related to the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases. Studies conducted by Mayo Clinic investigators have led to innovative treatments for patients with vascular diseases. This includes the development of endovascular surgery, a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. Endovascular surgery can shorten recovery time and length of hospital stay for patients treated for abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease and thoracic aneurysms.

Mayo investigators are conducting a comparative study of carotid angioplasty and stenting (an endovascular procedure) and carotid endarterectomy (open surgery) for patients who have a normal risk associated with surgery. This study will compare the efficacy of each procedure in preventing stroke.
