Advances in immunosuppressive drug therapy have allowed doctors to perform complex, multiple-tissue-type transplants (vascularized composite allotransplantation) such as hand transplants, in which surgeons reattach skin, bone, muscles, nerves, tendons and blood vessels simultaneously.
