Referring a patient

Outpatients

Rheumatology Appointment Office

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time, Monday through Friday.
  • Direct line to the appointment coordinators within Rheumatology.
  • Patients may be referred for an evaluation. Current clinical and laboratory data and X-rays should always be available at the time of the evaluation.

Referring Physicians Service

  • Phone: 800-533-1564 (toll-free).
  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time, Monday through Friday.
  • Appointment coordinators are available to take information and arrange appointments directly in Rheumatology as well as in other divisions or departments.
  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • A Mayo answering service will record the information. Appointment coordinators will call the referring physician (or physician's office) back between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central time.

Inpatients

Rheumatology Appointment Office

  • Direct line to Rheumatology appointment coordinators, who will connect the referring physician with Mayo staff. A Rheumatology consultant is on call to arrange the hospital transfer.

Mayo Clinic operator

  • During working hours, the operator can contact the staff physician on call for rheumatologic diseases or for any other specialty. In emergency situations during off-hours, the clinic operator will assist in dealing with the situation.

  • Call the Mayo Medical Transport Emergency Communications Center at 800-237-6822 (toll-free) to request Gold Cross (ground ambulance), Mayo One (helicopter ambulance) or Mayo MedAir (fixed-wing air ambulance).
