Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The Mayo Clinic Pulmonary Function Laboratory in Minnesota is one of the largest and busiest laboratories in the world for testing the condition of patients' lungs. The lab, located on the 18th floor of the Gonda Building, serves 150 to 200 patients each day and performs approximately 70,000 tests per year.

The Pulmonary Function Laboratory provides more than 25 routine pulmonary diagnostic tests and many more specialized procedures. The laboratory consists 24 procedure rooms, including:

  • 12 pulmonary function testing rooms
  • 5 arterial blood sampling rooms
  • 2 cardiopulmonary exercise laboratories

As a result of its large patient volume, advanced technology, outstanding quality assurance program and research activities, the Pulmonary Function Laboratory has earned a national reputation for quality and accurate diagnosis of respiratory ailments. Mayo Clinic staff developed and refined many of the pulmonary function tests used routinely in labs around the world.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Pulmonary and Critical Care division also offers a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program for people who experience breathing problems as a result of chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema or other chronic lung disease. By learning breathing and relaxation techniques, the program helps you:

  • Maximize your energy level
  • Improve your overall health and well-being.

Spirometry Training

The Mayo Clinic Pulmonary Function Laboratory provides spirometry training certified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). See the NIOSH website for complete course details.
