It's hard to get through life without developing sudden or long-term pain in your arms or legs, including arthritis and injuries. And anyone can break a bone.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery diagnoses, treats, rehabilitates, and prevents disorders of the musculoskeletal system, which includes:

  • Bones
  • Joints
  • Ligaments
  • Tendons
  • Muscles
  • Nerves

In addition to providing effective treatment for common musculoskeletal disorders, our physicians specialize in treating a number of orthopedic conditions, including:

  • Reconstruction
  • Fracture care
  • Shoulder surgery
  • Total joint replacement surgery
  • Bone and soft tissue sarcomas (tumors)
  • Foot and ankle problems
  • Hand surgery (including trauma and arthritis reconstruction)

Many orthopedic conditions have more than one treatment option. Mayo's orthopedic surgeons work closely with specialists in other medical disciplines to ensure that each patient's problem is thoroughly evaluated and that all treatment options are considered, so the best possible health-care can be provided.

Our physicians use minimally invasive procedures whenever possible to reduce pain and speed recovery. Outpatient surgical procedures can be performed at Mayo Clinic or Mayo Clinic Hospital. Surgeries requiring overnight hospitalization are done at Mayo Clinic Hospital. Before and after surgery, assistance from physician specialists in Internal Medicine, Radiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and other medical and surgical areas help speed recovery for our surgical patients.
