Research

Mayo Clinic nephrology and hypertension scientists are at the leading edge of research in the causes, prevention and treatment of kidney disease and hypertension. They are nationally and internationally recognized for contributions to advancing care and rapidly bringing proven innovations to people who need them. Mayo Clinic is also home to the Robert M. and Billie Kelley Pirnie Translational Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Center.

Mayo Clinic is developing a renal care center of excellence in the United States, with Baxter International Inc., a global innovator in renal care. The center is being established at the Mayo Clinic Dialysis Center, Jacksonville, Florida. The center provides state-of-the-art dialysis services in a comfortable, homelike facility. The collaboration between the clinic and Baxter will also allow for the trial of potentially new, codeveloped products and services.

Other research areas at Mayo Clinic include:

  • Improving heart and kidney function in people with chronic heart failure and kidney disease
  • Better understanding the renal complications of pregnancy
  • Identifying the genes for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and the devastating infantile form, autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease
  • Identifying the mechanism that drives progressive renal damage
  • Discerning why long-term kidney disease leads to cardiovascular disease and death
  • Calcification of blood vessels in the heart
  • The role regenerative medicine may play as a therapy for chronic kidney disease
  • Comparing treatments for renal artery disease and their long-term outcomes
  • Studying the impact of home pressure monitoring on long-term control of blood pressure
