Laboratory Medicine and Pathology supports physicians at Mayo Clinic and elsewhere by performing testing services for diagnostic and therapeutic evaluations. More than 2,350 people working in numerous specialty laboratories staff the department. They form one of the largest clinical laboratories in the world, which performs more than 27.6 million tests annually. The laboratory teams consists of highly experienced physicians, scientists, medical technologists, medical technicians, histotechnologists, cytology technologists, pathologist's assistants, phlebotomists, lab assistants, biologists, chemists, microbiologists, geneticists, genetic counselors and other specialists all working collaboratively.

With more than 190 physicians and Ph.D. scientists in the practice, Mayo's most extensive laboratory services are located in Minnesota. Besides serving Mayo Clinic patients, the laboratories also do testing for other clinics and hospitals nationally and internationally. The Florida and Arizona departments provide the vast majority of testing for their practices.

In Arizona, clinical laboratory testing for patients is available, as well as consultative work for the setup, staffing, equipment purchase and evaluation, and test repertoire selection for referring physicians' office laboratories. Consultation services include the following specialties:

In Florida, outside-referred clinical laboratory tests for patients are available. The department also offers consultations for setting up, staffing, purchasing and evaluating equipment, and selecting the test repertoire for physicians' office laboratories.

The Departments of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology on all three campuses are state and federally licensed and are accredited by the College of American Pathologists.

MCL is the laboratory referral center for Mayo Clinic. MCL specializes in esoteric laboratory testing for health care organizations throughout the United States and around the world.
