Consultative practice

The consultative practice provides outpatient health care to people who come to Mayo Clinic from within the United States and live outside of Olmsted County in Minnesota. The doctors provide comprehensive, coordinated and efficient care with diagnostic and therapeutic expertise. Patients with complex conditions get the care they need in a seamless way that connects them with other specialized experts at Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic doctors provide medical care in collaboration with your local primary provider. People usually are referred from regional clinics when they require the expertise and highly specialized care at Mayo Clinic. You also may self-refer to this practice, but it's important that you have a local doctor for primary care issues.

The consultative practice is involved in ongoing efforts to study health care delivery and innovation systems, health care quality, and clinical research. Members of the practice maintain close educational ties with Mayo Medical School, Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education Internal Medicine Residency and several Mayo fellowship programs in general medical fields.

Services offered

  • Comprehensive care for people with undefined symptoms — such as shortness of breath, chest pain, abdominal pain and back pain — who need help in diagnosing their illness
  • Collaboration, which means we guide your care if you need the help of a surgeon or other physicians from Mayo Clinic's multidisciplinary team of specialized experts
  • Preventive medicine care — such as mammograms, Pap smears, routine colon cancer screening evaluations, cholesterol screening and blood pressure screening
  • Communication with your local primary provider so that everyone involved understands the plan for ongoing care when you return home. This is especially important if you have one or more chronic medical illnesses — such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and emphysema
  • Comprehensive management of medical needs for hospitalized patients, including preoperative evaluation of medical risks before surgery
