Exam of Tissue

  • Tissues (skin or mucosa) submitted for permanent (routine) sectioning must be sent in regular serum vials containing 10% formalin. A completed order form needs to be submitted along with the specimen and should include information about the location of the sample and the patient’s clinical diagnosis. Note: Tissue will not be processed unless a completed order form is also submitted. Formalin vials and order forms are provided free of charge by Mayo Medical Laboratories and may be obtained by calling the toll-free number 800-553-1710 and asking for supply item T101 and T060, respectively.
  • Formalin fixed tissue is processed and embedded in paraffin. Serial sections are prepared and stained with hematoxylin and eosin and subsequently examined via light microscopy by the dermatopathologist.
  • The dermatopathologist’s report routinely contains a microscopic description and diagnosis. A comment is also included when necessary. Reports are faxed and mailed to the clients and generally this process takes no more than 48 hours after receipt of the specimen by the laboratory.
  • 1 hematoxylin and eosin slide is sent to the client for their records. A second slide and tissue block are retained permanently in file in dermatopathology.
  • Special discounted rates are available for our regular clients. If information is needed about our discounted rates then please contact the dermatopathology laboratory by phone, fax or email that is listed in the contact segment of this page.
