The Division of Cardiovascular (CV) Anesthesiology provides specialized care for over 4,000 patients undergoing cardiac and vascular surgical procedures at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., each year. This care is continued into the intensive care unit where CV Anesthesiology consultants provide postoperative care for both adult and pediatric cardiac surgical patients.
The CV division utilizes state-of-the-art equipment and patient monitors to maximize the quality of patient care. New anesthesia machines were purchased for all of our rooms in 2003. Specialized monitoring techniques, to measure heart function and pressure, are frequently performed as indicated.
A close working relationship with the cardiac and vascular surgical teams is maintained to enhance the team approach to patient care. Staff members in Cardiovascular Diseases are also closely involved in patient care in the operating rooms, performing transesophageal echocardiograms in the majority of cardiac surgical cases.
The CV division includes experts in the areas of cardiopulmonary bypass, echocardiography, blood coagulation, physiology and pediatric cardiac anesthesia. Research and educational efforts are directed at improving perioperative patient care, and include the evaluation of new medications, treatments and medical devices.
Some of the current research projects focus on:
- Reduction of brain injury with cardiopulmonary bypass
- Improvement of blood coagulation
- Reduction of blood product transfusion
- Improvement of kidney function after cardiac surgery
