Some insurers require referrals or may have additional requirements for certain medical care. All appointments are prioritized on the basis of medical need.

At Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, oral and maxillofacial surgeons typically perform dental implant surgery. The treatment team — from the Department of Dental Specialties — also includes a periodontist, who specializes in treating the structures that support the teeth, such as bones and gums; and prosthodontists, who fashion and fit the artificial replacement teeth.
