On May 12, 2005, the Mayo Clinic Division of Cardiovascular Surgery marked 50 years since the first use of the enhanced Mayo-Gibbon heart-lung machine to repair a congenital heart defect.

Previous and current Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular Surgery staff gathered in Rochester, Minn., to enjoy an exciting mix of social and educational programs, including the opening of a special Heritage Hall Display with photos and artifacts from the past 50 years of innovation in bypass and cardiac surgery at Mayo.
