The Bridget Thompson Story -- Bridget Thompson has many factors on the positive side of her health ledger. As a nurse in the Chicago area, she understands the importance of preventive care. She is in excellent physical condition, eats a healthy diet and does not smoke.
But she faces major risk factors as well. Many of her siblings have high cholesterol. Her grandfather died of a heart attack at age 48. At a routine visit to her doctor, she requested a blood test to see if she should take medication for high cholesterol.

Tests revealed an elusive condition called "constrictive heart disease." The sac and lining around her heart were losing flexibility, preventing the heart from filling normally. Untreated, the condition can lead to congestive heart failure.
Tests at Mayo Clinic confirmed the diagnosis. Her family provided key support.
Bridget Thompson holds a heart-shaped pillow, a gift from the Saint Marys Hospital Auxiliary and the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery.

Years ago, surgeons might have avoided an operation at this point. Mayo specialists, however, drew upon extensive research programs and a large database of patient experiences. Result: Mayo recommended surgery before symptoms developed and while she was in the best condition to tolerate her operation.

Bridget Thompson had surgery to remove the sac around her heart and the lining of the heart. Both had become calcified, restricting the function of her heart. Today, she enjoys an active, independent life with no limitations.
