| History of Cardiac Surgery at Mayo |

| May of 2005 marked 50 years since Mayo Clinic surgeon John W. Kirklin, M.D., and his colleagues first reported utilizing the enhanced Mayo-Gibbon heart-lung machine to repair a ventricular septal defect in a 5-year-old girl. |

| Dr. Kirklin and his colleagues performed seven more heart-lung machine surgeries, representing the first series of patients having open heart surgery with this new device. This series of eight patients pioneered the new era of open heart surgery. |
|
