Cushing Syndrome

Overview

Cushing syndrome can develop when a person is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol over an extended time. Normally, the adrenal glands secrete cortisol under the control of the pituitary hormone ACTH. When the body produces too much cortisol or too much ACTH, or when a person takes drugs that are similar to cortisone, Cushing syndrome may result.

Cushing syndrome treatment involves returning the body's cortisone production to normal. To do so, doctors treat the condition causing Cushing syndrome, including tumors of the pituitary and adrenal glands. If tumors are present, treatment may include surgery.

Mayo Clinic doctors who treat hormone disorders (endocrinologists) diagnose and treat Cushing syndrome. Endocrinologists work with neurosurgeons, endocrine surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and other doctors to care for people who have Cushing syndrome.
