Diagnosis

Mayo Clinic doctors trained in brain and nervous system conditions (neurology), brain and nervous system surgery (neurosurgery) and other areas work together to diagnose your child's condition. At Mayo Clinic, your child's treatment team often may diagnose your child's condition and provide treatment recommendations in days, not weeks.

Doctors often diagnose and identify the cause of your child's abnormal head shape through a physical examination of your child's head. Doctors may also order tests to confirm your child's diagnosis, to diagnose any other conditions and to develop an appropriate treatment plan.

  • Cepahalometry. In cephalometry, your child's head is precisely measured using X-rays.
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan. This detailed imaging test can show any fused sutures, deformities and abnormalities in your child's brain or skull. Doctors may also use 3-D CT scans to diagnose the condition and develop a treatment plan.
  • Genetic testing. Your child may have genetic testing if doctors suspect a hereditary condition.
