Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Research

Mayo Clinic doctors have made important scientific contributions to the testing and treatment of COPD.

Robert Hyatt, M.D., former director of the Mayo Pulmonary Function Lab, developed the flow volume curve, an important part of pulmonary testing. Mayo Clinic was one of 10 centers participating in the Lung Health Study, the largest COPD study ever funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Mayo was one of 17 centers participating in the National Emphysema Treatment Trial.

In cooperation with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis, Mayo Clinic in Rochester is one of seven centers in the new COPD Clinical Research Network — funded by NHLBI. Mayo Clinic was recently selected as the radiology center and one of five clinical centers for the NHLBI-funded Lung Tissue Research Consortium, which supports research on the causes of COPD and pulmonary fibrosis.

Mayo Clinic doctors published the first clinical description of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in 1969. Mayo Clinic participated in the original Registry for Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (1988-1996), funded by the National Institutes of Health. Currently, Mayo Clinic is nationally recognized as a Clinical Resource Center by the Alpha One Foundation , a nonprofit organization that supports clinical research and health resources information for patients and families with this disorder.

The Thoracic Diseases Research Unit in Rochester is a group of pulmonary scientists investigating basic mechanisms of interstitial, infectious, and obstructive lung disorders. The Pulmonary Clinical Research Center at Mayo Clinic in Rochester is one of the largest contract clinical research centers in pulmonary medicine in the country. The center participates in many trials of new medications in late-stage development for treatment of COPD.
