Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and the Donna Hicken Foundation have announced plans for a National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer. The weekend long event, February 15-17, 2008, in Jacksonville Beach, will include a health expo, marathon, half marathon and fun-run. Proceeds will go directly to Mayo Clinic and to the foundation, which helps women with breast cancer who are struggling financially. "We're excited about the national awareness and funds this marathon will raise to help us in the fight against breast cancer," said Dr. Edith Perez, Mayo Clinic hematologist, oncologist and professor of medicine.
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, ranked as the top performer in the United States in quality and accountability measurements in 2006, according to University Health System Consortium, an alliance of 95 academic medical centers and 139 of their affiliated hospitals. "We are honored by this recognition, which reflects the dedication and expertise of all our staff who provide high-quality health care to our patients," says Glenn Forbes, M.D., CEO of Mayo Clinic Rochester.
Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the Arizona Parkinson's Disease Consortium (composed of six research institutions) are
co-recipients of a $2.8 million, three-year grant from the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The money will be used to investigate predictors of the disease and related dementia. "We're thrilled to collaborate on this unique initiative," said Dr. Charles Adler, professor of neurology and chairman of the Mayo Clinic Division of Movement Disorders.
